Another soul has come to The Farm!

Another soul has come to The Farm!

Her name is Bullette and she arrived this afternoon. She's a pretty together little lady- she's already gambolling about the paddock.  She's Candy's third calf - Lolly first, then Cobber, now Bullette. Look at that face! She's a real hereford, judging by her looks. Thanks to the team at Handley AB, particularly Adrianna who co-ordinated our AI program and Mostafa who is a fantastic AI tech. These wonderful people went out of their way to help us achieve the success we're having.

Christmas Goodies - they're really good!

Christmas Goodies - they're really good!

Mary's been really busy in the kitchen in her yearly attempt to bake Christmas into submission! Those of you that know us from the Evandale Sunday Markets will be familiar with her lovely little Christmas Cookies - she's made a massive batch and they made a splash at this week's markets. For those that haven't had the pleasure, they're tiny little morsels of her signature shortbread, shaped and decorated with Christmas in mind. They're $6 for a pack of 25 cookies and you can buy them here. SOLD OUT! The last pack of cookies sold at the Evandale Markets on the 11th of December. There's always Hawthorne Shortbread Melts to see you through...

There's not much from the baker's oven that's more Christmas-y than Gingerbread. This year, Mary's made Gingerbread People in packs of 2 ($3 per pack) and 3 ($5 per pack), Gingerbread Christmas Trees for $25 and Gingerbread Houses for $49. You can buy Gingerbread People here, but because the Trees and the Houses are not post friendly, they're only available for pick-up from the Evandale Sunday Markets or The Farm. Orders can be placed here. Please note that we need full payment up front (there's a lot that goes into making them) and that orders are open until midnight Wednesday the 14th December 2016.

Spring has sprung - better late than never...

Spring has sprung - better late than never...

It's been a long time coming - nine months or so - but spring really has arrived on the farm. OK, we know that it's officially been summer for a couple days, but we had a very spring-y event here on the farm today.

Our first born bovine daughter has herself become a mother today! Sometime this morning, Misty gave birth to her first calf. She's a beautiful little girl, showing her bloodline off in true Murray Grey style and looks perfect to us. She's about 25kg (I'm guessing - I've already had to rescue her from a drain, a Tiger snake and a dam - I feel qualified to guess) and her name is Lady.

There's a tradition of naming the offspring in honour of their Mum. The First in this bovine line on Hawthorne Hill Farm was Mrs Grey - a very pretty and somewhat bossy Murray Grey heifer of about six months age when we met her. Mrs Grey just seemed to fit her personality (cowanality?). Sadly, she's no longer with us as she died during this last winter of causes unknown. Her daughter is Misty - a play on a tea theme - Mrs Grey for Earl Grey - Misty (Miss Tea) - and now Lady (Lady Grey). We don't know where this theme will go. Tea doesn't seem a particularly name friendly theme. Suggestions welcome.

Photos to come!
